Last week I did a Microsoft Excel course. The teacher was talking about formulas, “You have to make sure the dollar sign is next to reference A if you want column A to stay locked… keep the sign next to row 2 if you want that locked… you can have the sign on both if you want the column and the row to stay in sight while working on the rest of your workbook.”
As he went on, only one thought came to mind: the Western world has made life so difficult on itself for what appears to be… no reason at all. I just kept thinking, ‘Dollar signs… next to the letter A… and the number 2? This is ridiculous. Why is anyone talking about this? It doesn’t matter!’
We contrasted this with Aboriginal culture. In Ernabella (an Aboriginal community where I partly hail from), it’s not so much that the people are lazy; it’s more that their minds are enlightened enough with community & family life. It’s the value of family that fills the Aboriginal mind. Not work (as the Western world defines it).
What makes more sense to you? Staring at a screen, putting dollar signs next to a number so the row stays locked? Or spending the day with family and friends?
I think people who complain about those who don’t work are probably jealous. They wish they could do that.
If… only… work… wasn’t… so… important… for-some-reason.
Which leads me to this. The dole. Speaking from an Aboriginal perspective, I’ll start with an illustration.
Last week we had a young Aboriginal man from the bush come to my work. What this meant is that, as an organisation, we had to temporarily slow down our workload so that we could help him out. It would’ve been more productive for us to just pay him, not have him come to work, and do our usual week.
From a micro-perspective you can sometimes see things from a macro-perspective.
It is much easier for Australia to set up finance for people who would "slow us down" in the global sense.
So, I won’t complain about people on the dole:
1) Australia set up the system. Complain about that, not the people. As George Carlin once said, “The lower class are there… just to scare the crap outta the middle class. Keep ‘em showing up at them jobs!!!” It’s a system. That’s all it is.
2) Who cares? Like I said, the first world has made life so unnecessarily hard for itself I don’t blame anybody for not “wanting in” on putting stupid dollar signs next to stupid letters so they won’t shift outta sight as you work on your stupid workbook!
