How did I come to believe Jesus? The Holy Spirit (John 3:1-8)
Why do I still believe Jesus? Well… the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:28-30)
: But I believe God works these things out a little more practically. So if I were to exchange Him as my answer for something else I believe to be true I’d say this:
How did I come to believe Jesus? The Church (Romans 10:10-15)
Why do I still believe Jesus? Well... the Church (Hebrews 10:19-25)
: To state it simply, I grew up in the Church and it brought me the opportunity to believe Jesus. I would even go further than some and say that the Holy Spirit caused me to believe: all glory for my salvation goes to Him.
But the way He did so was through the Church.
The first question is not enough though. There are many people who have grown up in the Church, having had similar experiences to me, but are no longer around. So the second question becomes very important (plus it’s also Biblical!): why do I still believe Jesus? Alas, the answer is exactly the same: because of the Holy Spirit through the Church.
This answer, dear Christian, is also your answer. There’s nothing unique about my situation.
The principle is this: God designed the place where He would meet with His people.
The Church is much the same. In the New Testament, God has designed the Church, sometimes right down to the finer details. And the same principle applies: He designed the place where He would meet with His people.
So once you come to believe Jesus as Lord your first duty as a newborn Christian is threefold:
1) Read your Bible to discover what God says about you, which will always involves the Church (Christianity, like much else in the Western world, has declined into something waaaaay too individualistic. It is not completely about the I, it’s about the we.)
2) Look for that Church where you know God is the Architect.
3) Submit to that Church, which is a Biblical instruction in itself (Hebrews 13:17; 1 Thessalonians 2:7-12; 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).
: The reason why I still believe Jesus is because I have tried to follow these three guidelines, especially the third one. The Church is here for many reasons: to encourage you with Scripture and prayer, to guide you in life, to instruct you with Biblical morals, to refresh you with the Holy Spirit, to be a place of fellowship with your new family, and I believe it is the only place where God showers His children with the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit.
And the Church is much more.
I have every reason to believe that I follow Jesus today because of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit through the Church in my life.
